Heads Up: ‘Monty Python’s Wonderful World of Sound’ (BBC Radio 2, tonight, 22.30pm)

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Obviously, the idea of a Monty Python documentary fronted by The Mighty Boosh should cause any self-respecting comedy fan to run screaming for the hills. However, we suspect that this two-part radio show covering the Python LP releases may actually prove quite listenable.

Back in May, the producer of the show (which, at that point, had the working title ‘Monty Python’s Tiny Black Round Things’) contacted us and asked us to help out. He’d “pillaged” our old Python pages in preparation for the Python interviews and was interested in gleaning more info - especially about Alan Bailey’s paperwork. We passed on contact details, dug out some rare audio bits and pieces, provided the odd extra factual snippet where required and made a couple of suggestions (somehow we doubt that our idea to reunite the Fred Tomlinson Singers and get them to provide some acapella jingles went anywhere, but at least we threw it in…).

The results should be interesting anyway. Potentially a nice swim through some previously uncharted waters. The main attraction will surely be the interviews - four of the Pythons, plus Neil Innes (apparently discussing ‘Open Field Farming Songs’!), Andre Jacquemin, Alan Bailey, Dave Howman and John Du Prez.

Who knows - at least one of them might tell us what Rainy Day In Berlin was all about.

NEXT WEEK: SOTCAA salutes Josie Long’s five-part Frank Zappa retrospective.
